About

About the Space

The Che Cafe Collective is a longstanding collective space on UCSD campus, and has existed since 1980. Collectives are communities dedicated to functioning in an anti-hierarchal way. This means that we make all our decisions via unanimous consensus, and everyone at our meetings has the same power to block decisions. General meetings occur Mondays at 7pm in the space and on Zoom. The meeting Agenda is open to the public as well. Multiple sub collectives exist and reflect different aspects of the space. Here is a list of sub collectives, their meeting schedules, and what their focus is:

Booking: This sub collective is responsible for event planning and program organizing in the space. Live music events of any genre, student org events, theater projects, movie screenings, and any other event that requires organizing and booking a time and date in the space is figured out in this sub collective. If you are interested in the music scene or in organizing events, the booking sub collective meets Wednesdays at 7pm.

Kitchen: This sub collective works on managing and maintaining our fully vegan kitchen space! The sub collective's goal is to have the kitchen up and running during regular hours, and to sell and make vegan food on a regular basis. Meetings occur as needed (see calendar for exact dates).

Mutual Aid: As of Fall 2022, Mutual Aid UCSD became a sub collective of the Che Cafe Collective. Its main projects are acquiring/distributing food donations, maintaining the Che Community Fridge, and facilitating our regular study/open hours for students and non-students alike to study and socialize. The Che Community Fridge will remain open at all hours that the collective space is open. The Mutual Aid sub collective meets Fridays at 12pm.

Other sub collectives such as the Policy, Finance, Education, Social Media, Maintenance also exist, but meet less frequently. As the collective grows and circumstances allow, these groups may begin to meet on a regular basis and other sub collectives may manifest. See calendar for other sub collective meeting dates.

How do I Join?

All you have to do is volunteer! The Che hosts many events that need volunteers in order to run. For volunteering at shows, try to show up an hour to half an hour before the listed door time. Coming to meetings is also a great way to get involved and gain more responsibilities over the space! Benefits to volunteering at events are free admission and food (if food is being cooked).

Volunteer tasks include any of the following:

Event related: sign in at doors, supervising the space, setting up sound system/PA/stage, clean up, crowd control

General: kitchen duties, study hour supervision, checking and answering emails, managing social media sites, tracking volunteer attendance, creating schedules, maintaining newsletters, organizing events, handling money, archiving and maintaining our zine collection, outreach, etc.

Hours

General Hours: 12-5pm as well as event hours
